      Award-winning investigative journalist and novelist Gardiner (Hazard) synthesizes five years of research into this episodic history of Johnson & Johnson, beginning with its baby powder product and ending with its development of a COVID-19 vaccine. Readers will recognize the baby powder story, where asbestos was found within the talc, and the acetaminophen (Tylenol) cyanide recall in 1982. After detailing this negligence, the focus moves to Risperdal, an antipsychotic given to children and seniors without adequate testing; Duragesic, a fentanyl patch that defies all safety regulations; Ortho Evra, a birth control patch with high estrogen levels; and medical devices, including metal-on-metal hip replacement products and the mesh product used to treat pelvic prolapse. Time and again, the FDA's inert approach is documented, as is the compliance and deceit exercised by Johnson & Johnson executives. Throughout the narrative, Gardiner honors those who repeatedly tried to stop harm from happening: the whistleblowers, advocates, patients, and victims of Johnson & Johnson's perjury. Meticulously researched, the book concludes with steps that the healthcare industry, the FDA, and regular citizens can take to stop this conduct from continuing.       Harris conducts consummate investigative journalism in this gangbuster expos� of the Johnson & Johnson corporation. Reaching back to its origins with the Johnson brothers in the post-Civil War era, he takes readers on a dark and devastating ride through a corporate pattern of greed and malfeasance that becomes more disturbing with each revelatory chapter. From the dangers of asbestos in Johnson's baby powder to acetaminophen overdosing from extra-strength Tylenol and the damage and death from the push to prescribe antipsychotics to children and tumor enhancing(!) drugs to cancer patients, at every turn a cavalcade of executives and managers have embraced the opportunity to make money regardless of the consequences. Comparisons to Patrick Radden Keefe's Empire of Pain (2021) are obvious, although Harris' work is all the more stunning as Johnson & Johnson has held an enviable and unmatched degree of trust in America for decades. It is very nearly impossible to believe that this company could be capable of so many layers of deceit and dishonesty, yet that is exactly what Harris lays bare in this masterfully researched title with a narrative akin to a thriller in its intensity. An absolutely unforgettable must-read.
